Looking for a weekend escape that combines stunning architecture, world-class pizza, and a splash of academic inspiration? Look no further than New Haven, Connecticut.
As a mom living in New Jersey with a 1st grader and a Pre-K toddler, I’m always on the hunt for trips that are “fun-sized” yet meaningful. Last weekend, we traded the NJ suburbs for the gothic spires of Yale University in New Haven. Whether you’re planting seeds of ambition in your little ones or just craving a legendary slice of “Apizza,” New Haven is the perfect destination for NJ families.

1. The Yale Campus Walk: Harry Potter Vibes in Real Life
Walking through Yale’s Old Campus felt less like a college tour and more like stepping into a movie set.

- Sterling Memorial Library: My kids were mesmerized by the cathedral-like ceilings. It’s a great spot to whisper about the “magic of books.”
- Beinecke Rare Book Library: The windowless marble walls are a marvel. It’s a quick, visually stunning stop that even the youngest kids can appreciate.
- Pro-Tip for NJ Moms: Download the Yale Admission Audio Tour app. It’s free and allows you to explore at your own pace—perfect for when the kids need a sudden snack break!
2. Retail Therapy: The Yale Bookstore and More!
Beyond the stunning architecture, we made sure to stop by the Yale Bookstore and the surrounding Gift Shops. If you think it’s just for textbooks, think again! These shops are a treasure trove for families.

- Ivy League Style for Kids: We were impressed by the variety of Yale-branded kids’ gear. From tiny “Yale Class of 203X” onesies for the youngest to stylish varsity jackets and hoodies for elementary kids, there’s something for every age.
- Beyond Apparel: The shops are packed with unique souvenirs like Yale-themed school supplies, mini-mascot plushies (Handsome Dan the bulldog!), and even educational toys.
- Mom’s Favorite: While the kids were picking out their favorite trinkets, I couldn’t resist the “Yale Mom” accessories. It’s the perfect way to bring a piece of the Ivy League spirit back home to New Jersey.
- Shopping Tip: Make sure to check out the independent gift shops along Chapel Street as well. They often carry unique, high-quality items that you won’t find in the main bookstore.
3. The Great Pizza Debate: Is New Haven Pizza Better than NJ’s?
You can’t talk about New Haven without mentioning its world-famous “Apizza” (pronounced ah-beets). This thin-crust, coal-fired masterpiece is a serious rival to our beloved New Jersey and New York pies.
The city is home to the legendary “Big Three” pizzerias, and every local has a fierce favorite:
- Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana: The most famous pioneer, known for the iconic White Clam Pie. (Expect the longest lines here!)
- Sally’s Apizza: Founded by Pepe’s nephew, offering a slightly different char and a cult following.
- Modern Apizza: The “Local’s Choice.” It’s often cited by New Haven residents as the most consistent and authentic of the trio.
Our Choice: Modern Apizza on State Street
While tourists usually flock to the first two on Wooster Street, we headed to Modern Apizza—a true legend since 1934.

- The Saturday Rush (A Reality Check): We arrived around 5:00 PM on a Saturday, and the wait was already incredibly long. If you’re traveling with hungry kids like us, standing in line for an hour isn’t always an option.
- The Pro Move – Take-out: We decided to order take-out instead! It was a brilliant move. We got our hands on the hot, fresh pies much faster and enjoyed a more relaxed family dinner.
- The Unexpected Hit: White Clam Pizza: You might think clams are too adventurous for a 1st grader and a Pre-K toddler, but our kids absolutely loved the White Clam Pizza! The fresh, briny clams paired with garlic and olive oil on that crispy, charred crust were a total game-changer. Even for the little ones, it was the star of the show.
- The “Italian Bomb”: We also tried their signature “Italian Bomb.” The brick-oven crust was perfection—thin, charred, and structurally sound enough to hold all those toppings without the “NJ flop.”
4. The Scenic Drive from NJ
- More Than Just a Highway: The drive from North Jersey (Bergen County) takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, but it’s far from a boring commute. Instead of just endless pavement, the route takes you through some scenic stretches of New Haven. As you drive along the coastline, you’ll catch glimpses of charming seaside towns and beautiful landscapes that make the trip feel like a true getaway right from the start.
- Smart Parking Tips: Parking in a university town can be tricky, but we found some great spots:
- Street Parking: There is metered street parking available right in front of the Yale Bookstore.
- Surface Lot: If you prefer an outdoor lot, there is a very convenient and affordable surface parking lot right in front of the bookstore as well. It’s only about $2 per hour, which is a steal for such a prime location!
- At Modern Apizza: They have their own dedicated parking lot, which is a huge relief when you’re picking up your pizza.
Final Thoughts
Visiting an Ivy League campus isn’t just for high schoolers. For my children, seeing the “big kids” in such a beautiful, historic environment of New Haven made the idea of college feel exciting and magical. We came home with full bellies, new Yale hoodies, and very big dreams.
