With the freezing New Jersey temperatures and unpredictable winter weather lately, every mom in the Tri-state area is on the hunt for the perfect indoor activity. We need a place where kids can burn off energy, stay warm, and actually learn something new.
Last weekend, my family found the ultimate winter escape: The Newark Museum of Art (NMOA). Often overshadowed by the giant museums in Manhattan, this local gem is surprisingly interactive, educational, and—most importantly—completely indoors.
If you are looking for a way to beat the winter blues, here are 5 reasons why the Newark Museum of Art is a must-visit for your family right now.

Plus, they have some incredible events coming up this February weekend, celebrating Lunar New Year’s Day and Valentine’s Day that you won’t want to miss!
1. The Interactive Animal Kingdom: Kids’ Favorite!
If your kids are like mine, they’ll want to head straight here. The Animal Kingdom exhibit was the absolute highlight for my children because it blends nature with high-tech fun.

- The Magic LED Wall: This was the biggest hit! Kids can color their own animal drawings and then “scan” them to see their creations instantly appear and move across a giant LED multimedia wall. It’s an incredible way to see their art come to life.
- Cave Paintings & Discovery: Beyond the digital fun, there are immersive displays like cave paintings that let kids explore how humans have depicted animals since the beginning of time.
2. A Living History Lesson: The Ballantine House
Step out of the modern museum and directly into 1885. The Ballantine House, a Victorian mansion connected to the museum, is a National Historic Landmark that feels like a real-life time machine.

- Educational Value: It’s a fantastic way to discuss social studies and NJ history. My kids could see how people lived before electricity and iPads, sparking great conversations about how much the world has changed.
- Immersive Experience: Walking through the grand dining rooms and library makes history feel “real” rather than just something they read in a textbook.
3. Weekend Art Programs: Creative Play & Family Sundays
The museum is a hub for young creators. We loved how these programs encourage kids to make their own masterpieces after being inspired by the galleries.

- Creative Play (Saturdays, 12:15 PM): Perfect for ages 2–5. It includes a gallery adventure followed by a craft. This February, they are focusing on beading (Feb 21) and weaving (Feb 28), which my two girls absolutely loved.
- Family Sundays (Sundays, 1–4:30 PM): In honor of Black History Month, kids (ages 5+) can create a “Who’s Special in Your Life?” collage. For more background on why this month is so important, check out the Smithsonian NMAAHC resources.
4. Special Event: Lunar New Year Celebration (Year of the Horse!)
Mark your calendars for Saturday, February 14 (12 PM – 5 PM)! The museum is hosting a massive Community Day to celebrate the Lunar New Year. It’s free (registration required), and the lineup is incredible:
- Performances: From the thrilling Lion and Dragon Dance by Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company to a special performance by the New Jersey Korean School Children’s Choir (at 1 PM!).
- Culture & Fun: Enjoy a Taiwanese puppet tale, Kung Fu demonstrations, and even a ribbon dance workshop.
- Food: There will be food and drinks available for purchase, making it a full-day family outing.
5. Teen Night: Love Frenzy (Ages 13-18)
Do you have a teenager at home? Friday, February 13 (6 PM – 9 PM) is their night!
- The Vibe: A teen-only party with music, dancing, free food, and a “Couples Outfit Competition” (dress in Red, White, or Pink!).
- Tip: School ID is required, and the museum is closed to the general public during this time, giving them a safe, “cool” space to hang out.
⚠️Essential Travel Tips: Parking & Admission
- Free Entry with BOA: I used my Bank of America card to get a complimentary ticket through the “Museums on Us” program (valid the first full weekend of every month). Check if your card or local library pass qualifies! With this benefit, we could save a lot of money for our family’s weekend activities.
- Construction Alert: The museum is currently undergoing major construction around the parking lot and main entrance.
- Parking & Access: The museum lot is limited, so look for garages on Central Ave. Follow the signs to the Main Entrance on Washington Street—it’s a bit of a walk through the construction zone, so give yourself an extra 15 minutes! To avoid all this hustle, I preferred to take a taxi with my children.
