STEM is an Adventure, Not a Subject
As a parent, I often wonder: How do I make my children love subjects that are traditionally seen as “hard,” like Math and Science? We recently visited Liberty Science Center (LSC) during their “Math Madness” event celebrating Pi Day. Although the event was a seasonal highlight, our visit reminded me why LSC is a premier destination for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education. It’s not just a museum; it’s a place where abstract concepts come to life.
In fact, we were so impressed that we chose LSC for our very first family membership among all the museums in the NJ/NY area. Every visit has been a worthwhile investment in igniting my two daughters’ curiosity. Here is why we love it and how LSC is turning my girls into lifelong STEM lovers.

Rethinking Math: The “Math Yoga” Experience
The standout moment for my 1st grader and Pre-K child was definitely Math Yoga. Often, we introduce math through worksheets and drills, which can feel repetitive. Math Yoga flips this script.

Math Yoga
- Kinesthetic Intelligence: By using their bodies to form acute angles, right angles, and parallel lines, kids internalize geometry.
- The “Aha!” Moment: My children weren’t just “doing math”; they were living it. When a child transforms their body into a triangle or a square, they understand the properties of those shapes far more deeply than by simply drawing them on paper.
- Confidence Booster: It takes the “fear” out of math. By merging physical movement with logic, kids build a positive emotional connection with numbers.
As if the math challenges weren’t enough, we had some very special guests this year! Elmo and Count Von Count from Sesame Street made a grand appearance to celebrate Pi Day with the kids.

- Learning with Elmo: My Pre-K little one was so excited to see Elmo, who is just starting to learn about numbers—just like her!
- The Math Expert: On the other hand, my 1st grader got to meet the counting legend himself, Count Von Count. He was there to remind everyone that March 14 ($3/14$) is the perfect day to celebrate the magic of $3.14$.
- Free Keepsake: We were able to take a FREE keepsake photo, which is now a precious memory of our math adventure. If you’re planning a visit during a special event weekend, always check the schedule for these character meet-and-greets!
Deep Dives: Our Hudson Home & 3D Ocean Exploration
This visit, we spent a lot of time on the 4th Floor, and it was truly a highlight:

Our Hudson Home & The Touch Tank
This exhibit is a must-visit. My kids got to experience the local ecosystem firsthand by touching creatures that actually live in the Hudson River.
- The View: Don’t forget to look out the massive windows! You get one of the most stunning, unobstructed views of the NYC Skyline while learning about local ecology.
Oceans: 3D Movie
We took a break to watch a 3D Ocean Movie. Seeing the sheer scale of blue whales on a massive screen made my 1st grader’s eyes light up. It’s a powerful way to teach marine biology and conservation through immersive storytelling.
Must-Visit Exhibits for Every Age Group
- Little Ones (Pre-K): Wobbly World is a sensory-rich area where they can explore balance and physics through play. Please note there is a height limit (under 42 inches) to ensure a safe environment for the youngest explorers.
- Energy-Burners: The Infinity Climber remains a top pick for my older child—it’s structural engineering you can climb on! Kids must be at least 42 inches tall to enter, and MUST wear sneakers (closed-toe shoes with rubber soles). My two girls spend the bulk of their time here every visit, and honestly, I believe it’s a far better experience than any standard kids’ cafe.
- Planetarium Shows: Don’t miss the Jennifer Chalsty Planetarium. It’s one of the largest in the world, and it makes the vastness of space feel within reach. We felt completely immersed in our ‘space trip’ thanks to the engaging explanations from the LSC staff. These shows sparked such a deep interest in my 1st grader that she’s now constantly reaching for books about the universe.
The Perfect “Brain Break”: Liberty State Park Playground
After a morning of high-focus learning, a “brain break” is essential. We always finish our day at the Liberty State Park Playground, located right next to the center.
Liberty State Park Playground
- Outdoor Freedom: Moving from the indoor exhibits to the wide-open greenery helps kids process what they’ve learned.
- The Icon: Playing in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline is a world-class experience that never gets old. It’s the perfect spot for a picnic and some fresh Hudson River air.

Conclusion: Cultivating a Lifelong Love for Learning
As a mom, seeing my 1st grader’s eyes light up at the planetarium and watching my 4-year-old confidently tackle the Infinity Climber makes our membership so worth it. It’s rare to find a place that satisfies both their physical energy and their intellectual curiosity so perfectly. Whether they’re digging for fossils or gazing at the stars, LSC has truly become the place where my girls’ love for STEM begins. If you’re looking for a way to spark that ‘science magic’ in your own kids, a day at Liberty Science Center is the perfect place to start.
