Are you planning a trip to Disneyland with kids this year? As a mom living in the Tri-State area, Orlando’s Walt Disney World is usually the go-to destination. However, for this Spring Break, our family decided to fly across the country to the place where it all started: Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California.
Is it worth the 6-hour flight from Newark (EWR)? How does it compare to the Disney World we know so well? In this first post of my Disneyland series, I’m breaking down the “East vs. West” Disney debate from a real NJ mom’s perspective.

1. The Logistics: NJ to CA
The biggest hurdle for NJ families is, of course, the flight. A 5.5 to 6-hour flight is no joke with a 5 and 7-year-old.
- Flight Tip: We flew out of EWR (Newark). If you can, book a morning flight. By the time the kids start getting restless, you’re usually descending into LAX or SNA (John Wayne Airport).

- The Time Zone “Secret Weapon”: Usually, jet lag is the enemy. But for Disneyland? It’s your best friend. Since NJ is 3 hours ahead, our kids were naturally wide awake by 6:00 AM California time. We were at the gates for “Rope Drop” (park opening) every day without even trying, while the locals were still sleeping!
2. Why Disneyland is Perfect for the “Little Years”
As someone who has looked into both coasts, I found Disneyland much more manageable for the 1st Grade and Pre-K age group compared to the massive scale of Disney World.
One of the biggest reasons we chose Disneyland with kids over Disney World this time was the manageable size of the parks. Having a 1st grader and a Pre-K student meant we needed a vacation that wouldn’t leave us exhausted by noon.
- Walkability: You can walk from Disneyland Park to Disney California Adventure in about 60 seconds. There are no monorails, buses, or skyliners needed once you’re at the gates. This is a lifesaver when you have a tired Pre-K child.
- Mickey’s Toontown: This recently reimagined area is a dream for younger kids. It’s designed for play, with plenty of grassy areas to run around and the popular Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway.

- The Weather: April in Anaheim is perfection. We enjoyed 75°F (24°C) days with zero humidity—a stark contrast to the unpredictable NJ spring or the sweltering Florida heat.
3. Our “Must-Do” Attractions
While we have our favorites in Florida, these three areas in California were absolute game-changers for us:
- Mickey’s Toontown: This recently reimagined land is perfect for younger kids. It’s a “yes” space where they can run, climb, and play. The Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway here is a must-see.
- Pixar Pier: Located in California Adventure, this area captures that iconic West Coast boardwalk vibe. It’s incredibly photogenic and features beloved characters from Toy Story and The Incredibles.

- Avengers Campus: For families with superhero fans, this is the ultimate destination. Watching Spider-Man fly over the buildings left both my kids speechless!
4. The Verdict: Disneyland or Disney World?
If you have elementary-aged kids or younger, Disneyland is a winner for ease and charm. While Disney World offers more variety, the stress-free navigation and the historical “original” feel of the Anaheim park provided a unique magic that we absolutely loved.
